Lake Microsystems Airspeed System (LMAS) (Available April 2017)

All pilots need to know their airspeed. This is equally true for RC planes and UAVs because they operate at low speed where gusty winds coupled with turns can lead to an unanticipated stall and crash. Unlike full scale airplanes, no effective airspeed detection system has been available for these aircraft — until now. Lake Microsystems introduces LMAS, a small, lightweight, airspeed detection and reporting system for RC planes and UAVs. Watch the LMAS video.

LMAS weighs just 1.7 ounces and can be installed on most RC planes. LMAS measures airspeed, not ground speed, using a very small low inertia impeller driven by the relative wind generated by the airplane’s movement through the air.

The airspeed sensor sends airspeed data to Spoken Link, a small receiver, using a 900 MHz radio link. Spoken Link converts that data to voice, and sends it to the pilot via earbuds or a powered speaker. There is no need to take your eyes off the plane, LMAS tells you your airspeed every 1.7 seconds. LMAS has a stall warning system you can set with your plane’s stall speed. When you drop to within 5mph of stall speed, it warns you with a tone that rises in pitch and frequency as you approach stall speed.

LMAS can be installed in a wing, or the fuselage, or an external container like a bomb, as long as it has access to undisturbed relative wind. A variety of installation techniques are possible. The sensor (AS) intake tube may be trimmed or positioned inside an appropriately sized carbon fiber or brass tube (see nose cone install below).

The LMAS may also be mounted in a bomb or drop tank complete with battery and RT. This allows an independent airspeed system that can easily be moved between aircraft.

LMAS comes with one airspeed sensor (AS), one remote transmitter (RT) and one Spoken Link receiver (earbuds and batteries are not included). Airspeed sensors can be purchased separately for $79.99
